The Indonesian Mosque Council has announced plans to build 100 mosques in the Gaza Strip in occupied Palestine. The plans, said former Indonesian Vice President Muhammad Jusuf Kalla, have been prepared in response to the urgent need of the people of Gaza, especially with the approach of the holy month of Ramadan.

“It is important to inform the Indonesian community about the situation in Gaza, and that more than 1,000 mosques in Gaza have been destroyed by the Israeli occupation within a year and a half,” explained Kalla, who currently serves as Chairman of the Indonesian Mosque Management Council. “As a first step, the Council will build 10 semi-permanent mosques, with the total number ultimately reaching 100 mosques.”

The official expressed his hope that Muslims in Indonesia will contribute to support the construction of mosques in Gaza.

“We have coordinated with the relevant authorities in Gaza and will determine how to implement the construction process,” added Kalla.

A ceasefire in the Gaza Strip came into effect on 19 January, and its first phase will last for 42 days, during which negotiations will begin to start a second and then a third phase, mediated by Egypt, Qatar and the US.
